A tuner that listens like a musician

Clarity where other tuners lose the note.

Fine Tuna separates a stable musical pitch from the noise, overtones, and changing envelope around it. That makes the display unusually readable on instruments that are difficult to hear electronically.

01

Respond quickly, without chasing the attack

Fine Tuna finds the stable musical pitch through fast attacks, noise, overtones, and changing envelopes—even on difficult instruments.

02

Make the display yours

Strobe shape, colors, opacity, geometry, harmonic lanes, pitch washes, and light or dark appearance are all customizable.

03

Keep the musical context

Temperament, transposition, accidentals, reference pitch, and display choice stay connected while you tune.

Customize the display

See pitch the way you want.

Move from a calm frame to a precise ring strobe, a pitch bar, harmonic analysis, or recorded review. Fine Tuna’s views share one tuning engine, so changing the picture never changes the musical answer. Some examples of the available views:

Notation that follows the music

Read pitch in the language you use.

Choose note names and octave conventions independently. Fine Tuna carries that choice through the tuner, keyboard, temperament tools, and passage review.

A keyboard built for listening

Hold the reference. Hear the difference.

Fine Tuna’s keyboard uses the same active temperament, reference pitch, transposition, and accidentals as the tuner. It can be a pitch source, a chord partner, or a laboratory.

Stretch Tuning

See the curve behind the tuning.

For instruments whose inharmonic partials make pure octaves sound wrong, Fine Tuna can calculate a stretch-tuning curve based on the specific instrument. Choose among several stretch curves—clean 4:2 octaves, 8:2 double octaves, or more advanced algorithms like Minimum Entropy, based on work by Haye Hinrichsen. Record your own instrument to create a customized curve based on its own spectrum.

Live feedback is just one way to listen. Record a passage and Fine Tuna maps its intonation over time: a timeline of every note, a per-note report, and a pitch map—with playback at full or half speed, note by note.

The musician behind Fine Tuna

Built by someone who tunes every day.

Hi, I'm Jeffrey Grossman, a harpsichordist and conductor, and the man behind Fine Tuna. I tune my instrument every day, and as an early music nerd, I care a lot about temperaments and pitch systems! I want to give musicians the tools to decide for themselves what “in tune” means, and to understand what their choice of temperament does to the music. Happy tuning!
